We teach a lively and varied curriculum, providing many exciting opportunities for our learner. We seek to inspire, engage and ensure our learners have an understanding of the world around them.
Learners are taught in small groups to ensure that the able are stretched and those who require support have their needs met. We are particularly skilled with learners who may not have English as a first language, making special provision for them and welcoming a variety of language experiences.
We offer qualifications at Entry and GCSE level in the English Language at our Bryn y Deryn site. Both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature are delivered at our Carnegie site. The majority of our learners achieve an English qualification.
We believe that good literacy skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening are central to the process of thinking and some of the most useful skills we can offer our young people.
The Power of the Written Word
Do you like working out a 'Whodunnit', thinking about what it would be like stranded on an island? How about being in the middle of a tricky home situation?
If so, you will love English Literature!
English Literature, put simply, is the reading and close study of novels, plays, and poetry. At GCSE, you will be required to express your ideas in written responses that are coherent and thoughtful.
What will I read?
In year 10/11 you will read the classic novella, 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck. You will have the option of 'Heroes' by Robert Cormier, or 'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding as you prose text. In addition to the novel, you will read a play. This can either be 'An Inspector Calls' by J.B Priestly, or 'A View from the Bridge' by Arthur Miller.
Wherever possible the learners are encouraged to see the productions in the theatre. These are always an enjoyable experience!
We regularly use ICT and media technologies to engage learners in developing their own learning. We place great emphasis on the value of oracy, often inviting visitors to share experiences. There is an expectation for learners to participate actively in all lessons.
